ABOUT MAESTRO

Maestro Art of Learning is a private tutoring group. We enrich people's lives through the use of reading and writing. Our main goal is to foster a community of literate people, who can enjoy and analyze literature, music, political speeches, scientific findings, and more. We do this by creating a culture that is both encouraging and rigorous.

Jose and Karlen Dubon began Maestro Art of Learning because they value education. After graduating from UCLA, they sought to help students through the gift that changed their own lives -- a love of reading. Jose, an aspiring writer, works with a student to strengthen their understanding over the rules of grammar and the effective habits of a writer. He understands that one can only achieve this by building meaningful relationships and by doing meaningful work. Maestro Art of Learning seeks to be a partner in your child's literacy goals.

TESTIMONIALS

"To say that Jose had a positive influence on my life would be an understatement. Jose played an integral part in my life that helped me to become the person I am today.

I first met Jose when I attended elementary school, and he has been my tutor through the end of high school. We met once every week at the library near my home. During this time, we would go over various writing techniques, styles, homework, and brainstorming ideas for essays. In short, he taught me how to think, identify main points, and most importantly, how to express my ideas.

During the summers, we would analyze a variety of books from Homer's Iliad to Gabriel Garcia Marquez's A Hundred Years of Solitude. The ideas and analysis of these books would later prove to be invaluable to many future writing assignments.

One of my most challenging assignments was when I competed in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The most difficult category in the competition is the literary reference section. There was a large variety of maritime books to choose from. During a round, one of the questions that came up, asked for specifics from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Jose and I had discussed this book a couple years before, and I was able to compete in that round with ease and confidence---I won.

I am now a sophomore at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo majoring in Electrical Engineering. Contrary to popular belief, writing is as important to an engineer as anything else. Being able to express ideas and results is just as important as conceiving them. It goes without saying that if not for Jose, I would not be here. Jose will be there for you and will guide you down the path until you see success."
